A Family Legacy of Quality, Tailoring, and Timeless Style

A love of fashion, craftsmanship, and quality truly runs in my family. My great-grandfather owned a menswear manufacturing business, and my grandfather later took over before becoming Vice President of Sales for Missoni Men’s. My grandmother owned the iconic boutique Cliffhanger in Ardmore, Pennsylvania during the 1970s and 80s. It was one of the first stores to sell teen-focused fashion, especially premium denim.

Even back then, her boutique stood out because of its unique point of view: modern yet timeless, youthful yet impeccably refined. That spirit of individuality and excellence shaped everything she touched, and it shaped me as well.

Why Quality and Fit Always Come First

My grandmother had one of the most extraordinary wardrobes I have ever seen. She was a master at blending vintage and modern pieces, designer and non-designer garments, and elevating them all through quality tailoring and impeccable styling.

Her jewelry box alone was a work of art, filled with fine and costume accessories that transformed even the simplest outfit into something extraordinary. Her home, too, reflected this same philosophy: every antique, every object, every fabric was chosen with intention.

From her, I learned that quality isn’t about price. Quality is about construction, fit, and longevity. She believed that when something is made well and tailored correctly, it never goes out of style.

The Art of Tailoring: A Skill Passed Down Through Generations

My grandfather brought the precision of menswear into everything we bought. Every time we shopped, he checked:

  • Shoulder structure
  • Seam alignment
  • Pattern matching
  • Buttons and stitching

He taught us that great style starts with great tailoring, and that no garment fits perfectly off the rack. Bodies are unique, and clothes should be customized to fit them.

That’s why, to this day, whenever I travel to a new city, one of the first things I search for is a tailor near me. A skilled tailor can take something ordinary and make it exceptional.

How My Grandmother’s Tailor Changed Everything

My grandmother had a beloved tailor and seamstress named Irina. We visited her for everything from bat mitzvah dresses to prom gowns, and for altering everyday pieces that became wardrobe staples.

Through her, I learned how tailoring transforms clothing—not just to fit better, but to feel better. A well-tailored garment doesn’t just look good; it gives you confidence, polish, and presence.

Building a Wardrobe That’s Both Timeless and Unique

Every school year, my grandparents took my sisters and me shopping. But this wasn’t about buying lots of clothes—it was about building a thoughtful wardrobe.

My grandmother always asked,

“Do you like it, or do you really love it?”

Then she made us create three outfits using that single piece. That lesson still guides me today: everything I buy must work with what I already own, expanding my options instead of cluttering my closet.

That’s how you build a unique, high-functioning wardrobe—through intention, not impulse.

Repurposing, Up-Cycling, and Making Fashion Last

My grandmother also loved giving garments new life. If something wasn’t being worn, she’d reimagine it: a dress into a skirt, sleeves removed, a hemline changed.

I do the same today. When I modify or up-cycle a piece, I’m not just refreshing my wardrobe. I’m honoring her philosophy of sustainability, creativity, and quality craftsmanship.

A Love for Beautiful Things, From Clothing to Accessories

Antique shops and flea markets were another classroom. My family taught me to recognize high-quality materials, excellent construction, and timeless design—whether in clothing, furniture, or accessories.

Those skills are the same ones I use now when choosing fabrics, garments, or finding the perfect tailor to bring a vision to life.

Why Tailoring and Quality Still Matter Today

In a world of fast fashion, tailoring, quality, and craftsmanship are more important than ever. When you invest in well-made clothing, customize it to your body, and care for it properly, you don’t just look better—you buy less, waste less, and express yourself more clearly.

That’s the legacy my family gave me:

A love for beautiful things, respect for craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the power of a perfectly tailored garment.

And yes… I will always be searching for the best tailor near me.
